Hi Folks,
You are cordially invited to a special ringing practice to mark the
retirement of Don Towers, who was tower captain at St Paul's Dundee for over
ten years.
The special practice will take place at St Paul's Cathedral, Dundee on
Monday 22nd May, 7.30-9.00pm.
Please just turn up although if you have the chance, do let me know if you
intend coming (stephen at elwell-sutton.co.uk, 07968 247 350). This is only to
make the biscuits, cakes and other stuff last a bit longer!
Don was instrumental in restarting ringing in Dunkeld after a break of fifty
years. He and his wife Moira trained a band from scratch and it is a
testament to his ability that the band is still going strong today with some
of the original ringers.
Though well-known as a ringer, Don may be better known for the various
pieces of woodwork around the towers in Scotland, particularly stays! He
also made many of the tables in Scottish ringing chambers and even
constructed the eight wheels for the refurbished bells in St Paul's Dundee,
not to mention the St Andrews Shield that we compete for each year.
Apologies for the short notice; Don goes away touring shortly, for several
months and this Monday is the only opportunity we have of giving him the
send-off that he deserves in recognition of all he has contributed to
ringing in Scotland.
Hope to see you there if you can possibly make it!
Cheers,
Stephen
